Fascia - the most important organ you’ve never heard of

The fascia is a remarkable network of connective tissue that is a fundamental component of our musculoskeletal system. It plays a vital role in maintaining structural integrity, supporting essential internal processes, and facilitating movement. It runs throughout the entire body, surrounding and supporting muscles, organs, nerves, joints, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and bones. The fascia resides only 2-3 inches beneath the skin but plays an essential role in every movement we make.1 2 5

“Normal movement of the body is allowed because
of the presence of the fascial tissues and their
inseparable interconnection”

National Insitute of Health (NIH)

Everyone’s fascia is impacted during their lifetime

Everyone’s fascia will be impacted during their lifetime, and it has been found to undergo structural changes as an inevitable part of aging.3 4 Studies have identified that fascia around areas of injury or stress may tend to be thicker, less mobile, and less hydrated. We believe fascial structure may be damaged due to a number of factors, including:6 7 8 9 10

  • Injury
  • Repetitive movements
  • Poor posture
  • Wear and tear
  • Aging

Given fascia’s role in supporting nearby structures, such as joints, tendons, muscles, ligaments, and nerves, these alterations to fascial structure may also effect the function of these structures and contribute to symptoms such as pain or restricted mobility.7 12 13 We believe damaged or altered fascia may often be a hidden contributor to, or even driver of, the symptoms of many common conditions and injuries including:

  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Chronic pain
  • CRPS
  • Inflammation
  • Joint injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Nerve pain
  • Overuse injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Restricted mobility
  • Sciatica
  • Tendonitis

Fascia historically received little academic attention

Despite its pivotal role in movement and overall health, fascia has often been long overlooked as a key factor in pain and diminished flexibility. In-depth fascia research and our medical understanding of the tissue has expanded considerably in the last few decades, with many meaningful findings in recent years including those starting to reveal fascia as an area of potential treatment for various conditions and injuries.11 12 Recent research even suggests that fascia’s crucial role goes beyond physical function to play an essential role in the functioning of both the nervous and immune systems.

the immune system spread”
