RELIEF® For Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Decorative

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by generalized joint hypermobility, musculoskeletal pain, frequent joint dislocations, and respiratory issues.6,7 Fascia, a collagen-rich connective tissue, surrounds muscles, joints, and other structures throughout the body, and plays a vital role in structural support and musculoskeletal movement.3,4,5

The Role of Fascia in Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

One of the main causes of dysfunction in hEDS is the overactivity of an enzyme, Matrix MetalloProteinase (MMP). MMP is responsible for the degradation and remodeling of the fascia.6 As a result of MMP’s overactivity in patients with hEDS, an excess amount of collagen may be synthesized in the fascia, causing abnormal fascial thickness and adhesions. Adhered and thickened fascia often causes reduced functionality of the fascia layers, leading to less support and more stress on nearby musculoskeletal structures - which may lead to chronic pain, joint instability, and diminished functional activity, particularly walking and bending, among hEDS patients.1,2

Addressing these fascial abnormalities is essential, as fascia-focused treatments may be the key in helping to alleviate the chronic pain and other symptoms of hEDS, and help improve overall quality of life for hEDS patients.

How RELIEF® Can Help Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

The RELIEF® procedure is designed to address what may be an underlying cause of hEDS, by specifically targeting problematic fascia. The treatment combines ultrasound guidance, hydrodissection, AMUC injections, and more to release fascia restrictions, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue healing.

  1. Initial Assessment: A comprehensive ultrasound tissue assessment to identify areas of fascial restriction and scar tissues around areas of pain.
  2. Ultrasound-Guided RELIEF®: Our physicians use ultrasound guidance to precisely target, hydrate, and release tightened fascia. The procedure is designed to separate and release fascia layers, aiming to promote tissue health and help reduce hEDS symptoms.

The RELIEF® procedure may directly address fascia-related issues contributing to hEDS, helping to improve joint function, alleviate pain, and enhance the overall quality of life for hEDS patients.

RELIEF® For Mun Bains' Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Mun Bains

Medical Student

Mun Bains faced intense discomfort due to the severity of his hEDS. This condition caused constant debilitating pain and fatigue, making it impossible for him to live a normal life. Despite trying numerous traditional and non-traditional treatment options without success, including antidepressants, pain medications including opioids, nerve-blocking drugs, platelet-rich plasma injections, acupuncture, and more, he was unable to see progress in his symptoms.

"Every doctor I talked to, I tried everything, but it just led me to a life of surviving, not thriving.”

His quality of life deteriorated to the point where he enlisted in Canada’s assisted suicide program, MAID (Medical Assistence in Dying).

“I didn't want to die, but I couldn't see a way to move forward in life, because I was just laid out all day, just trying to hold on to a thread."

Luckily, Mun heard about the RELIEF® procedure on Mike Tyson’s podcast, HotBoxin’, and immediately reached out to us. Under ultrasound, RELIEF® inventor Dr. Abhinav Gautam discovered extensive scar tissue and thickening of his fascia layers, and excessive collagen buildup in the fascia caused by the hEDS. These abnormal fascia structures were causing impingement on his nerves and lymphatic tissues, resulting in severe pain and mobility issues. Dr. Abhi worked on Mun for a week, 2-3 hours per day, to address the widespread fascial issues throughout his body. The RELIEF® procedure successfully reversed Mun’s symptoms and saved his life.

"There was instant relief, there was instant change. It gave me the keys to my life back. I’m able to start working on my medical career again. I didn't know what a normal life felt like until RELIEF®."
